The 7 year painting

On January 2nd in the year 2000 I put a blank canvas on my easel in my art studio in upstate New York and sat there for close to an hour thinking of what my first painting of the new millennium will be. Months earlier I had done a colored pen and ink drawing of a carousel horse that was morphing into a radiation meltdown of what is a real horse and what is man-made. The horse looking back the whole time seeing what is happening to him. I spent the whole month working on this painting with everything done except for the detail work. I put the painting away and there it sat in my studio, unfinished in my eyes. Everyone who came to look at my paintings would rave about it. But it needed to be finished. Last month I pulled it out, dusted it off and spent the next few days giving it it's final touches.
When it came time to sign it I went back seven years in time to put the correct date...I didn't feel any younger painting that 2 followed by three 0's but it sure was fun.

Tomato Tower

The tomato season is almost over here in the Hudson Valley. Because of the Indian Summer, it will last a few more weeks. The crop wasn't as good as years before but they were delicious all the same. Red, juicy and bursting with flavor. Anyone who stills buys supermarket tomatoes....you know, the kind they give you on deli sandwiches......well....I feel sad for you. You don't know what you're missing!

Start with a nice size tomato and slice through it 4 or 5 times into thick 1/2 inch wheels, slice some FRESH mozzarella the same, add some fresh basil leaves (I pull mine right off the plant).
Now build a tower starting with the bottom slice of tomato (the largest), a slice of mozzarella, basil, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, some sea salt and cracked pepper, continue until tower is complete. Garnish with mixed olives and Sriracha chili sauce dimes.

Oh yeah,...........Remember to make it with love for someone you love.

Fat Elvis.........'thankyouverymuch'

Last month was the 30th anniversary of Elvis's death and it seems like it was not that long ago. I was in 7th grade in 1977 and didn't seem to care much about it. ( I was more interested in Son-of-Sam and who he was going to murder next.....and or when the police would finally catch him.)

I have never been a big fan of Elvis and his music but the dude must have been a blast to hang with. The women, the booze, the drugs, the peanut-butter and bacon sandwiches, and the Kung-Fu moves he would like to pull on people followed by a hilarious comment on how you would fall victim to 'The King'. If I knew him he would have kept me laughing for days.

He changed Rock-N-Roll forever. The number one American Icon of music. Just like Marlon Brando changed American acting forever and Jackson Pollock changed abstract art (two of my favorites) they all got FAT.
Hey, it happens to almost everyone. I'm even starting to get a little fat....but who cares. Pork chops taste good. Bacon tastes good. And ice cream............I'm addicted.

This painting is ten years old. I painted him when I was living in Santa Monica, California on his 20th anniversary of his death for a Gallery show. He didn't sell. Most people were turned off that I painted the older, fat Elvis instead of the younger, sexier Elvis. I've had two offers since then from private buyers but I turned them both down. I have grown to love 'Fat Elvis' and I'm glad that he moved with me back to NY but he's back up for sale.

After all................... a guy's gotta eat.

One in November 2007 at Twisted Soul in Poughkeepsie, NY and one in April/May 2008 at Klatch in NYC .

- Send or email a short letter describing your pet's personality.
- State what size you would like your piece to be and list what colors you would prefer.

SPUD The Magic Bus

After a nice long weekend in New Hampshire, my girlfriend and I returned back home to beautiful Harlem, NYC where we saw two street cats take down a rat the size of a small dog. That's when we knew we had to leave that hood, move back up to the country for the summer and buy a 1973 VW Campmobile. The plan was to go camping all over the Catskill Mountains and the Pocono Mountains. But first the bus needed some work. After a new starter, battery, voltage regulator, alternator and a complete tune-up, she was ready to go. We started our trip on June 25th with trips to the northeast Catskills, through the east, back south and on to the Pocono Mountains. Spud only broke down once, in the middle of a intersection during a heavy rainstorm. We were only four miles from our campsite, so we called triple A and they towed us right into the site. When the rain stopped all I needed to do was to tighten the fan belt and Spud was running smooth again. More photo's from the trip to follow...................
